Celebrating the birthday of American writer and artist Edward Gorey noted for his illustrated books, Google Doodle has featured some of his felines from the Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. Gorey illustrated other notable books such as Dracula by Bram Stoker and The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells. Most people thought Gorey was British because of the style of his settings and work, but in fact, he was born in Chicago and only left the U.S. once, for a visit to the Scottish Hebrides. To day when honor Edward Gorey’s day of birth (February 22, 1925 – April 15, 2000).

The SuperFrog Gallery in SF this past weekend recently held a reception for Japanese Pop Artist and illustrator Yoshitaka Amano.Opening night consisted of Yoshitaka Amano him self along with Harajuku Lolitas hosted the event. The General Consul of Japan, Junichi Ihara also attended the event with a reception honoring Amano after the exhibit. The SuperFrog Gallery is the latest addition to San Fransisco Japantown. Junko Mizuno latest comic Pelu the Little Fluffy Gigolo, is about a cute extraterrestrial creature that comes to Earth disused as a playboy esque bird determined to find himself a real human bride for him to be truly happiness…Follow Pelu as he searches for love in a modern Japan as meets aspiring singers, sassy girls, paint-sniffing bad boys, and even the body-switching students of a mysterious high school.

Born in Tokyo, on May 27, 1973 Junko Mizuno was discovered by a booklet she created called “MINA animal DX.” Mizuno style is for the mature reader is imaginative and twisted and her work has been dubbed as Gothic kawaii. She is known for her grotesque remakes of classic fairy tails. Mizuno is constantly working on new comics, illustrations, paintings and designs for products ranging from toys to clothing.

Tim Burton collaborates with Dark Horse Deluxe to create characters from his popular book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories.
The Dark Horse x Burton worked together closely to make these characters as “real,” based off the Tim Burton The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy story. The 6” and Large-size vinyl versions of these characters are now available for the Burton or Dark Horse collector. Three releases are planned for the end of 2009: Oyster Boy, Stain Boy, and Toxic Boy.

The Tim Burton other new releases, including two heat-sensitive coffee mugs, a pull-tab journal that animates a Burton watercolor scene, a new light-up journal, playing cards, T-shirts and note cards in light-up boxes.

Fans of Tim Burton can also look forward to a retrospective show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York featuring the career of the man himself. The exhibit will run from November 2009 through March 2010. Dark Horse Deluxe products will be available at the museum, and the original sculpture maquettes for the figures will be a part of the installation. With previously unseen characters being exhibited.
