The Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival December 3, 2011

The third Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival is a special free event suitable for all ages featuring independent comics and graphic art from over 75 artists and publishers displaying and selling their publications. There will be open lectures and panel discussions on comics and graphic novels. The event takes place December 3, 2011 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church 275 North 8th Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Union Pool 484 Union Avenue # A New York, NY and with other independent events all over the Brooklyn area in arts and culture institutions.

Some of the featured guests include: Jack Davis, Phoebe Gloeckner, CF, Lisa Hanawalt, David Mazzucchelli, Chip Kidd, John Porcellino and Brian Ralph. These guests are joined by an international array of publishers including Drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics, Adhouse, Nobrow, Pantheon Books, Last Gasp, Akashic, Top Shelf, PictureBox, and Koyama Press, who in turn will host artists including Adrian Tomine, Jordan Crane, Michael Deforge, Gabrielle Bell, Dash Shaw, Gary Panter, Frank Santoro, and Leslie Stein.

Live Action Akira Debuting as Early as 2011

It’s been over twenty years since the immensely popular anime “Akira” captivated the world, creating a strong cult following to this day. Though fans have been content with just re-watching the original over an over and reading the manga series that started it all, talk of a live action movie sent fans into a frenzy. With Warner Bros. helming the movie and Leonardo Dicaprio rumored to star in and produce the film, anime forums began buzzing with debate. However, originally rumored for a summer 09 release, months went by without one more word uttered on the project leading many to believe the Akira project dead in the water (or at least kept in an underground cryonic chamber). Those worries were put to rest when writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man) were confirmed to be working very diligently on getting the script just right. If the script is accepted then production could start in 2010, with a release date of 2011. This is great news for Akira fans to know that an anime of such caliber is being worked on patiently and not rushed for quick profits.

Though, with much of the Akira movie still being shrouded in a cloak of mystery, fans cannot help but speculate on what to expect. Will Leonardo DiCaprio actually have a role? Will Tetsuo’s famous fight with the milk crying teddy bear remain intact? Will Kaneda be Japanese unlike the Dragonball live action??

This is what we do know about the movie:
1) Kaneda’s famous bike is in it
2) It’s set in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan
3) It will be awesome.. or so we hope!

I will continue to provide updates on the status of this blockbuster as I get it. In the meantime, pop in the Akira DVD and fantasize about what life will be like after the live action release!

Moresay’s favorite Gothic kawaii artist Junko Mizuno will be signing her graphic novel, Little Fluffy Gigolo PELU Vol. 1, at NEW PEOPLE Saturday, August 22 at 2pm. Born in Tokyo, on May 27, 1973 Junko Mizuno was discovered by a booklet she created called “MINA animal DX.” Mizuno style is for the mature reader is imaginative and twisted and her work has been dubbed as Gothic kawaii. She is known for her grotesque remakes of classic fairy tails. Mizuno is constantly working on new comics, illustrations, paintings and designs for products ranging from toys to clothing.

Natalie Portman set to play Jane Foster in Marvel Thor movie

Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures has announced Natalie Portman has been cast to star as Jane Foster in the highly anticipated comic made into film Thor! Portman will star opposite Chris Hemsworth who will play Thor and Tom Hiddleston who will play the villain Loki.In the comics The Mighty Thor was was in love with a nurse named Jane Foster. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce Thor which is set for May 20, 2011.

The Green Hornet is a fictional masked crime fighter. Originally created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker for an American radio program in 1930.

Robert Luketic x Dino De Laurentiis Barbarella

Robert Luketic and Barbarella veteran Dino De Laurentiis come together to develop a vampy updated of version of the 1968 film! It was rumored previously that Robert Rodriguez was to remake the intergalactic adventure with the super sexy Rose McGowan as Barbarella, due to lack of funding opened the door for Luketic to take over the film, it’s unfortunate too because Rodriguez is a amazing science fiction director, maybe next time. No word yet on who the cast will be, Moresay will keep you posted as more info is leeked out.

The “Barbarella” comic made her debut in 1962 in a French graphic magazine written and illustrated by Jean-Claude Forest. The 1968 Barbarella film starred 70′s pop icon Jane Fonda and produced by De Laurentiis.
