Sad news today Polish/Jewish born Jacob Kubert who emagrated to Brooklyn NY at age two months, known for his comics and the graphic novel Yossel. Kubert wrote, “I got my first paying job as a cartoonist for comic books when I was eleven-and-a-half or twelve years old. Five dollars a page. In 1938, that was a lot of money”. Kubert was inducted into the Harvey Awards’ Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1997, and Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998. Joe Kubert died on August 12, 2012, three weeks short of his 86th birthday. He will be missed.

The third Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival is a special free event suitable for all ages featuring independent comics and graphic art from over 75 artists and publishers displaying and selling their publications. There will be open lectures and panel discussions on comics and graphic novels. The event takes place December 3, 2011 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church 275 North 8th Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Union Pool 484 Union Avenue # A New York, NY and with other independent events all over the Brooklyn area in arts and culture institutions.

Some of the featured guests include: Jack Davis, Phoebe Gloeckner, CF, Lisa Hanawalt, David Mazzucchelli, Chip Kidd, John Porcellino and Brian Ralph. These guests are joined by an international array of publishers including Drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics, Adhouse, Nobrow, Pantheon Books, Last Gasp, Akashic, Top Shelf, PictureBox, and Koyama Press, who in turn will host artists including Adrian Tomine, Jordan Crane, Michael Deforge, Gabrielle Bell, Dash Shaw, Gary Panter, Frank Santoro, and Leslie Stein.

Though, with much of the Akira movie still being shrouded in a cloak of mystery, fans cannot help but speculate on what to expect. Will Leonardo DiCaprio actually have a role? Will Tetsuo’s famous fight with the milk crying teddy bear remain intact? Will Kaneda be Japanese unlike the Dragonball live action??

This is what we do know about the movie:
1) Kaneda’s famous bike is in it
2) It’s set in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan
3) It will be awesome.. or so we hope!

I will continue to provide updates on the status of this blockbuster as I get it. In the meantime, pop in the Akira DVD and fantasize about what life will be like after the live action release!

Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures has announced Natalie Portman has been cast to star as Jane Foster in the highly anticipated comic made into film Thor! Portman will star opposite Chris Hemsworth who will play Thor and Tom Hiddleston who will play the villain Loki.In the comics The Mighty Thor was was in love with a nurse named Jane Foster. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce Thor which is set for May 20, 2011.
