Is currently celebrating his 50th Anniversary Year, Paddington appeared in 1958 Written by Michael Bond and first illustrated by Peggy Fortnum. The polite immigrant bear from Darkest Peru, with his old bush hat, battered suitcase and marmalade sandwiches has become a classic English children’s literature icon. Paddington likes marmalade sandwiches and cocoa, and has an endless capacity for getting into trouble. However, he is known to “try so hard to get things right”.

Douglas & McInyre, the University of California Press, the Vancouver Art Gallery co-curators Bruce Grenville, Tim Johnson, Kiyoshi Kusumi, Art Spiegelman, Will Wright, Toshiya Ueno and exhibition design by Atelier Bow Wow. Put together a very rare 272 page book that covers a century in the world of comics, animated cartoons, anime, manga, graphic novels, computer/video games and visual art. The book will show examples of original sketches, notes, concept drawings, final production drawings, animation cells, three-dimensional models and published works . Spiegelman’s drawings of his Pulitzer prize-winning Maus, George Herriman’s Krazy Kat, Lotte Reiniger’s 1927 The Adventures of Prince Achmed, Will Wright’s video game Spore and Yuichi Yokoyama’s manga, New Engineering.
The exhibition also includes works by Moyoco Anno, Lynda Barry, Marcel Broodthaers, Chester Brown, Cao Fei, Milt Gross, Pierre Huyghe, Ichiro Itano, Tim Johnson, Yoko Kanno, Satoshi Kon, Harvey Kurtzman, John Lasseter, Roy Lichtenstein, Christian Marclay, Winsor McCay, Sid Meier, Shigeru Miyamoto, Junko Mizuno, Mamoru Nagano, Claes Oldenburg, Mamoru Oshii, Katsuhiro Otomo, Nick Park, Raymond Pettibon, Seth, Iwatani Toru, Chris Ware, Masaaki Yuasa and many more.” the book will be available in May and the Exhibit will be leave Vancouver and headed to NYC in early 2009, Moresay say will keep you posted.

J.K. Rowling has already written a follow-up to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the last in the Potter series, at Amazon, who purchased one of seven copies of the book, The Tales of Beedle the Bard at auction for 1.9 million British pounds, or just over $3.9 million dollars. The book, which is alluded to in the Potter series, is a handwritten tome of wizard cautionary tales, written and illustrated by Rowling. All of the proceeds from the auction will go to a charity she helped establish known as The Children’s Voice campaign, which helps provide a better life for institutionalized children. Amazon.com
